A Clayton cedar deck and screened porch

The brief

The existing 20 year old treated deck had a ledger nailed through the siding and footings that had heaved four inches. The owners wanted a screened room for the mosquito months and an open deck for the grill.

What made it difficult

The old ledger had been leaking into the rim joist for years, and roughly 16 feet of framing behind the siding had to be rebuilt before anything new could attach.

Tying a screened porch roof into an existing hip roof without creating a valley that dumps water behind the flashing takes a specific geometry, and the interior ceiling height had to stay above the second floor window sills.

What we did

We removed the deck, opened the siding, cut out and replaced the rotted rim and band joist, then flashed the new ledger properly with a metal Z flashing and a self-adhered membrane over the top.

The porch roof was framed as a shallow shed tucked under the existing eave with a cricket at the high side to move water into the gutter instead of into the wall. Ceiling height finished at 9 feet 2 inches, clear of the windows above.
